Maids or Men of Kent come from the area to the east of the River Medway and a Kentish Man or Maid comes from the west of the river.
The division may have arisen when the Jutes, who settled in Thanet over 1,500 years ago, moved into the area calling one part East Centingas and the other West Centingas.

I was born and brought up in Rainham, Kent and there was a pub in town called 'the Man of Kent' so I guess I must have been a Maid of Kent

So on this information if my daughter was born in Maidstone and we then lived in Harrietsham she would be a Maid of Kent like her Mum who was brought up in High Halstow even though she was born in Chatham.

Thanks
Lol .. I have no idea Kelly ....I was not born in Kent so cannot claim to be a Maid but spent my youth there in Chatham ! I went to Fort Pitt and am still in touch with an old school friend who lives in ...High Halstow and another who lives in Tunstall..This was over forty years ago though....It's a small world !
Small world as I live in High Halstow kent and find it interesting as I have a little girl. Does this mean she is also a Maid of Kent?
