what would be the best 5/6 day car trip to take through the 'wine areas' north of San Francisco, stopping/staying over at small quality hotels and restaurants along the way?

moyrajane, not sure about a trip through the wine areas but if you get the opportunity I would recommend a visit to Yosemite National Park (awesome) and Lake Tahoe.
