Hi,

I am looking to get a Beagle Puppy, and would like to know if any of you have any experience with this breed.

I have been used to larger dogs (German Shepherd's & Rottweilers) but I am looking for a smaller dog this time, but with a large dog attitude....!

Any info that you have on them or details of any reputable breeders I would appreciate...

Thanks

xx

oooh, sometimes, when walking my Ridgeback down by the river I'd come accross a beagle owner lol... and they were always looking for their Beagle hehe..... the delights of them once they get a scent? they're gone lol.....

Would you take a look at my fave rescue pleasee... we rescued our Dobe in Sept. from them... drove 600 miles and he's a delight... I waited for a dobe to come up as they have all sorts from pups to abused ex puppy farm animals

beryllium - your baby is gorgeous. A picture of health and mischief.
Hi, i work in a dog creche and we've had lots of beagles over the years! On the most part i've found them to be very friendly little things but not my kind of dog, here's why
Very stubborn
Follow their noses too much
Dustbins for food!
Toy and sometimes food possessive
Noisy, beagles "bay' a lot!
I've only met one beagle who i found responsive and like he actually listened to me!

Saying all that, the dogs we get at creche are 'pet' dogs, meaning most of the owners get a dog, and thats it. Just expect it to get along fine, without proper knowledge or training! If you put the work in they make great pets!

Hi Snappy,

Thanks for your response.. 'a dog creche'? I've never heard of that...?
I've been looking into the Beagle as a breed and it does seem that they have quite a lot of potential issues - like you say they follow their noses too much and many owners have said that they have lost dogs because of this !
Also the noise factor - baying..
And how difficult they can be to train....

So, in your experience what would you say would be a good dog for me..?
I am used to big dogs, but haven't really got the garden for one anymore - I have a large house, but with not alot of garden.
I do work, so there may be 6 hours a day he/she will be alone...
I hate small, yappie dogs..
I want to be able to walk them for a good few miles...
I don't want a lap dog..
What would you suggest ?
Or anyone else for that matter...
At Crufts in March they have a section called Discover Dogs
which has most of the recognised breeds represented. Their owners will tell you all the ups and down of their particular breed, and you can see them in the flesh.

It is held at the NEC Birmingham from 8th - 11th March.

Try doing this little quiz see what you think of the suggestions

BTW, here's the creche website if you wanna have a look!

Thank you SO much Snappy - you have been an amzing help!!
I aim to please!
I agree that you should go to discover dogs, and Crufts on hound day - you would also find a reputable breeder through them too.
