Is Atheistic Secular Humanism the new religion?

It worships Man, sacrifices to materialism, and scientists are its high priests.

Please don't lump materialism in with atheism, otherwise I'll have to start posting pictures of church leaders in palaces dripping with gold and heads of the church of England in robes of Ermine :c)

Humanism respects man rather than worshiping him and attempting to control him with threats of damnation.

There is a fundmental difference between proper science and religion. For something to be scientific it must be possible to disprove it.

Scientists must always accept the possibility however slight that they may be wrong (they often fall short I'll grant you). Religious devotess never do.

That is why Athiestic Secular humanism is not a religion

Thank you Jake - I heartily agree with your views on the mega rich churches, which I am not defending.

I still believe that A.S.H. has all the trappings of a religion, and with so many adherents, or worshippers, it is giving false hopes to millions.

For example, all of the doom and gloom in the media, is balanced by advertisements for newer, bigger, brighter better things to make life even better, and the number of people stacking up debt to worship in the house of A.S.H. is testimony to this.
I still think you are mixing ASH with materialism.

Look at people like Bertrand Russell for example - hardly Gordon Gecko was he?

Athiests are often accused of adhering to faith and so being effectively as much a religion as those they oppose. In some cases this is true.

The true touchstone is the answer to the question "could you be wrong?"

An athiest should say "I don't think so" or "I see now reason to think that I am"

If an athiest tells you he cannot be wrong he has crossed the line and joined you in church
Atheism isn't a faith, it's a lack of faith. Very different.

An atheist lacks the proof to convince him or her that there is a God. Faith has nothing to do with it at all.

Are you completely detached from consumerism then theland? Why have you got a computer? you don't need it. Who developed computers? scientists? marketing men? And you probably worship cliff richard. So, theland, you are an idolater.

What is more, you believe in one god so are atheistic about the multitude of other gods worshiped in human history. Is your non-belief in Thor tantamount to religion? do you practice your lack of belief in Odin?
Theland...you have consistently refused to answer my questions and then wonder why I keep knocking you on the head.Ah well, I will still try to answer yours.First off, just what is your problem with atheists? Is it because they dont agree with your belief system? No, it cant be, because niether do hindus, buddhists, scientologists or followers of Krishna and you dont keep asking questions of them.I'll tell you what your gripe is Theland. Its that you percieve atheists as immoral, hence your latest (illogical) diatribe against non theists. As an atheist I worship no man, im probably less materialistic than you (i dont own a car, my home is minimal....I dont even possess an mp3 player) and I dont particularly put scientists on a pedestal.
Far from my life revolving around materialism, it revolves around my family and the love of my family and friends.
Well spoken, Wizard!

Yikes! How did you know that I adore Cliff? Well almost as much as Floyd!

Materialistic? No! Don't drive myself, old biker man years ago.

Very sound reasoning though, and thank you all.

Wizard 69 - I've not forgotten you, but time prevents me from addressing your questions.
