I am also on Telewest blueyonder . I have never paid for internet security and have never had any problems.

I use the free versions of:

ZoneAlarm - firewall
AVG 7.5 - antivirus
Spywareblaster
Ewido
Spybot
X Cleaner
Ad-aware
A-squared
Xoftspy

They can all be downloaded from this site (primarily intended for eBayers but very useful none the less)

Personally I think ethel goes a little too far. You shouldn't need all that stuff.

You'll get by quite happily with AVG Free, Zonealarm Free, and Adaware Personal.
Yes. Go for AVG Anti Virus Free (be warned that it wont be free anymore after January) and go for Zonealarms Firewall (Brilliant)
It is AVG 7.1 that will not be available after January.

7.5 anti-virus is available now and will continue to be free.

Just to back up other posters:

There is absolutely need to pay for internet security products. As has been suggested, AVG Free is a great anti-virus solution. (It automatically updates itself every day, so your PC is always fully protected from the latest threats). They've recently 'shot themselves in the foot' by sending out messages that version 7.1 will no longer be supported from next January without mentioning that the latest version, 7.5, will continue to be free and fully supported. (i.e. 1960darrenh's error is understandable but Ethel's post is correct).

That's your anti-virus solution sorted out. All you really need on top of that is a decent firewall. As has been suggested, Zone Alarm Free is excellent:

Those two programs provide a complete solution to genuine 'security' problems. Adware and spyware aren't real security threats but they can slow your PC down. Ethel seems to have gone 'over the top' with her collection of programs. Ad-aware SE Personal is probably sufficient:

An Anti-virus and a firewall but Adawre doesnt give realtime protection.Youre better with Spybot. It will alert you if anything tries to make changes to your PC.
