can anyone tell me why should medication only be prepared and administered by a carer who has been trained to do so ?many thanks

For the same reason only a person who is registered with the GMC, has passed the MRCS or AFRCS and a period of Higher Surgical Training in Neurosurgery with a minimum of 6 years experience can carry out surgical operations to the brain (unless specialised in other areas of neurosurgery).

It could simply be a matter of life and death.

They need regulation, and a 'body' of peers who are already professional in the field to acknowledge their capability to carry out that duty with care and skill.

it's to ensure that a person takes the medication at the right time, the right quantity and does not forget to take it, and a carer would record this and also note any side affects and so on.

Hi grandmacath. If this is Safe Handling Of Medication you are doing, then I may be able to help. Q19.a, I put- All carers are accountable for their actions and a carer who makes a mistake in giving out medication will be held accountable for that mistake.
