It was originally to show that you welcomed the homeless or people without anywhere to go into your home at chrismas.
I always thought it was to symbolise the "Crown of Thorns" worn by Christ with the red berries his blood. But now I think about it, this has more to do with his resurrection than his birth.

May be linked though, who knows? The Lord works in mysterious ways.

I always understood it to mean that anyone can knock on your door, and you'd make them welcome,

Thats apart from Wardy's answer which is how it originated, and still sybolises.
