I have heard this phrase used to describe a heavy tackle or to be very drunk. Any idea where it originated from?

Maybe it comes from German footballer Gerd Muller, whose extra-time thundering volley that sent defending champions England out of the 1970 World Cup. It could explain the 'beaten' definition. I think the drunken definition is much more recent.
