What is Golden Syrup and what is it used for? Is it anything like maple syrup or molasses that we use in the U.S.?

Or best of all 'bucket pudding'! A steamed sponge pudding with golden syrup in, served with extra golden syrup and custard. Yummy! Bags I lick the spoon!!!
