The Que Sera Sera scene was just extraordinary, 2 of our best actresses on their best form - so poignant, funny and utterly believable. I loved Barbara's face when nan asked her to "do" her toenails, and then when she was trying to hold back the tears I was crying my eyes out. I watched the programme with my husband who hates the show, he grumbled for the first few minutes then I noticed a few smiles and even some tears. He would never admit it, but he enjoyed it too. It was wonderful stuff.
i notice that the majority of replies on here are saying ahow wonderful it was and i have to agree it was brilliant worth waiting for, so tell please why did the people who thought it was rubbish watch it to the end???
I'm in 2 minds about it. The 'classic' bits were as good as ever, but to be honest, I don't think the writers have the ability to carry off the 'serious stuff' with panache. It was just too mawkish and simplistic. And all too predictable, as others have said. Just compare to John Sullivan's handling of death (and other serious issues) in 'Fools & Horses'.

Sorry, but stick to what you can do well.

They have whole new horizons opening up with little David; I hope she does some more.

(Awaits flaming responses...)
i loved the relationship between barbara and nanna. jim was overacting at times, i cried when nanna diedm mostly the programme was excellent just maybe a bit too much going on at times.
Damn, I missed it! Does anyone know if and when it's repeated please? xxx
Regrettably (and I mean that, as I'm a massive fan), I didn't think much of last night's episode. Of course, being The Royle Family, there was some truly golden stuff, but the whole thing seemed to be much more overtly emotionally manipulative and sentimental than usual. I got a lump in the throat when Nan said she loved Barbara, for example, as it was...organic (for want of a better word), and unexpected in view of what had gone before, but even then they dragged on the scene for a bit too long. To me, the whole brilliance of the programme is in its distilling and putting into focus the emotions that underpin everyday interaction/ relationships between family and friends without banging you about the head with it.
I am, however, clearly in a minority on this one! In view of the heights it has reached before, I'll let Aherene & Cash off...
Thanks for spoiling my viewing. I was unable to watch it last night, so was looking forward to good viewing tonight. Why did you flag it as a Spoiler in the title, only to spoil it anyway in the first line of the question. Grrrr!
The "i love the royal family" thing that was on after it wasn't bad either!!
I did watch it to the end. Maybe because I'd been so excited to watch it and I was expecting so much i was disappointed. I thought some scenes dragged and some were rushed. I'm used to the Royle Family being slow and not too much happening. Maybe when I watch it again I'll think it's better, I won't be expecting so much from it.

To the people that have said spurslady spoilt them watching - you guess at the start what happens anyway!
I have to say that although I found it a little too familiar and not too funny I did think it was a fitting END to the brilliant show and I do hope that they are not tempted to bring it back - it proved that it would not be the same
The whole point of flagging a spoiler,is to give people the choice of opting out of reading further. You mentioned her death in the first line!!!!! Had it taped to watch tonight....kinda ruined it for me!!!!
Not for me I'm afraid.

Its not what I remember the Royle family being about.

Overacted, recycled and disappointing
Compostella (love the name!) has summed it up well....as a Royle family fan I was very disappointed.
I bawled my eyes out - especially when you see Jim is just a big softie at heart for all his shouting at nana

well said
Spurslady, as they say in the Royles " my arrrsssssssseeeee, don't tell us how to read, you said spoiler and did not wait till further on before commenting about it.
However if it was a mistake then fair enough, and jas102 - crawler !
Why would I possible want to crawl round someone I don't know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can read very well, spurslady, which is exactly why your spoiler spoilt it for me - if I couldn't read it wouldn't have been a problem would it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (See, I got a bag of exclamation marks for Christmas as well!)

That said, I have now watched it, and I thought it was brilliant. Wasn't the hospital scene the first time we've ever seen the family away from their house? Very moving.
