Many years ago for me, I make my own chips but they are nothing like real deep fried chips.  I miss them, but I can't say I miss the greasy pan full of fat, or the smell.

My mother's chip pan was rarely emptied and washed.  It was topped up regularly with the used fat from the frying and roasting pans.  I don't think she was unusual.

I have a deep fat fryer but only use it when the wifes away. I don't like oven chips. My wife huffs and puffs and scurries round in the depths of winter opening all the kitchen windows and closing the adjoining hallway doors. Just notnthe hassle when she's home. We have a perfectly effective fan assisted hob extractor fan as well.

could be worse. I used to fry up  Bombay duck in the kitchen until she got an electric frying pan and I was exiled to the garden shed.

Never - I would never trust myself with a deep fat frier.  I have a short attention span and have been known to forget that I am cooking.

I haven't had a deep fat fryer since I set fire to one 1973 and OH rushed it out into the garden.  Tried oven chips which we didn't rate, so the only time they are eaten is in a restuarant.

Barry if you are still around could you give me settings and timings for combi microwave, I tried googling but only found what looked like crisps.

//Chip shop chips taste even better after a quick dunk in the chip pan - often did that the day after the night before during my bachelor days.//

Air fryers do a good job of crisping up chips, even when I occasionally go to the chip shop I put some onto the air fryer first as when they're wrapped up the steam makes them soggy.  Next day they can be crisped up too, at our chippy I have to say Stop, they give you so many.

Me - if I take all the chips they give I end up throwing 2/3 away. Maybe it's to compensate for the smallness of the fish!

BTW - the best oven chips I've found are Aldi Specially Selected (Maris Piper) Chunky Chips. 😀

I deep-fry them in Flora oil - don't like oven or microwave chips.
Best of all, of course, has to be eating them out of a box, from the chippy,  down at the harbour 😊

I remember being a very green apprentice yrs ago and being asked all the time, ' where's my mom keep dripping ?'

If you really can't be bothered with chip pans etc, there are some nice oven chips out there these days as Davebro has said. It's just finding the ones you like best.

I tried the triple-fried ones once and the smoke that came out of the oven nearly choked me.

I don't fry chips or use oven chips. We have roasted wedges which are delicious, or we have chips at a specific cafe who fry them fresh in oil. Never from a chip shop and NEVER if they are called fries!
