I had trouble with laptop yesterday, managed to look at some emails but couldn't click on anything else.  Today switched on, first screen (picture of my dog!) and can't go any further. No matter what I click on nothing works.  Any ideas? Thanks.

Clicking with an external mouse or the touchpad?

With a mouse.  I'll try with the touchpad.

Restarting your laptop is the best option to restore functionality.
Method 1: Using Keyboard Shortcuts:
  > Press the "Ctrl + Alt + Delete" keys simultaneously. This will bring up a menu with several options.
  > Using the arrow keys, navigate to "Shut down or sign out" and press Enter.
  > Select "Restart" from the options and press Enter.
Method 2: Using the Start Menu (Limited)
  > Press the Windows key on the keyboard. This should open the Start Menu (if functional).
  > Using the arrow keys, navigate to the Power icon (usually in the bottom left corner).
  > Press Enter. This will display the power options.
  > Using the down arrow key, select "Restart" and press Enter.
Method 3: Force Restart (Last Resort):
  > Hold down the power button for at least 10 seconds. This will forcefully shut down the laptop.
  > Wait for a few seconds and then press the power button again to restart the laptop.

Worked! Thank you so much.  Why didn't I think of something so simple!

Thanks PsalmEquipt.  If I have any more problems I'll try that.

A quicker way is to press the power button for several seconds. The machine will shut off, then you can do a short press on the power button; choose default START option when it appears.

Thanks for all your replies.  I need a new mouse.

If it is a wireless mouse you probably need new batteries.
