A friend suffers from the above. She has, over the years used various drugs to the detriment of her health. She recently tried acupuncture, but it only worked for the first night. All suggestions greatly appreciated.

always swear by lavander in a warm bath and a series of relaxion exercises before I sleep...usually on Sunday night to combat the terror of Monday morning!
lettuce sarnies 1 hour before bedtime - sleep like a baby. Also, avoid coffee, tea (caffeine in general).
Anything milky before bedtime - chocolate, milk, ovaltine etc. The calcium in it can help you to drop off.
Boots' peppermint and nutmeg pillow mist made me sleep the sleep of the dead. Oh, and sex is supposed to be a cure for insomnia, so I hear.
valerian root extract from H&B followod by a bit of self abuse
I can half--agree with FTVS -- Valerian tea has pretty much cured my wife's insomnia. She drinks several cups of it a day... so has no time for the other half of FTVS's suggestion ;-)
Read an article the other day that suggests you should write down everything on your mind just before you go to sleep.
This is easier in the summertime; try and spend as much time as possible in the open air as early in the morning as possible. Sunshine is helpful, but the natural daylight in any season wakes up your body clock and signifies to your brain that the day has started. It should be easier to fall asleep 17/18 hours later as your body realises that it's time for sleep. For the last hour before you go to bed it's best not to do anything too stimulating to the brain such as watching a TV programme that will make you think too much or react emotionally.
Kalms tablets work for me an hour or two before I go to bed. They contain hop powder. They are quite subtle and they don't make waking in the morning difficult. They are obtainable from most chemist's. I have also tried Valerina Night-Time (I got mine from Boots). They also consist of natural ingredients and were very effective, but they smell and taste like vomit! It was difficult to decide which was worse, the insomnia or the smell/taste of the tablets! I shall stick to the Kalms for now. I guess it depends how strong your stomach is and how bad the insomnia.

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful for getting sleep.
