Is it on a timer

Are you and oxo the same person? You have both asked an almost identical question.

Could the pilot light be being blown out when a door is opened?

Maybe a safety thing ?

I remember back in the bad old days taking a Super Ser into the bathroom in the depths of a Scottish winter and, having filled the bath and closed the door to keep the heat in, settled in for a nice long soak.

A considerable time later I regained consciousness in a tub of cold water and immediately considered myself lucky.

Could be a safety thing.

Lucky .

I would imagine that it is a safety feature. If there is no thermostat, a room woul get extremely hot if it was left running.

I reckon it is cutting out because of the heat - BUT it may not be a design feature

Some of the older ones were pretty crude. Cutting out was usually down to a faulty/clogged up thermocouple. It's the thing that controls the supply of gas to the burner.

Modern heaters (good quality ones) have features like an oxygen sensor. It operates to shut off the gas if there's no longer a decent supply of air in the room.
