Do I Need A New Landline Phone ?

Hi,

BT have said my new digital voice service is up & running so I've plugged the phone cable into the router, leaving the router cable plugged into the wall (with filter). When I check the phone tho', I don't get the continuous "brrrrrr" to be able to call out, it's an intermittent "brrrr - brrrr - brrrr", like there's fault on the line.

Checked instructions I've found online & 1st thing it says is "unpack your Digital Voice handset". Eh ? Can I not use my regular phone / do I need to get a new one / should BT supply one ?

Have you tried making a call?  If you have a mobile phone, have you tried calling the landline?

That is the link I was looking at, I didn't scroll down far enough ... but looking at that, I still need either another phone, or a digital voice adaptor. I can't connect my current phone to wifi.

What make and model is your phone?

i am having a similar problem with virgin.  My phone is so old (60s/70s bakelite dial phone) that wont work wit the router (i had some solenoid or something put in when i got it so it'd work on vergin, but this is tech too far for my poor little phone!)

I hadn't tried to call it, or make a call, barry1010, as I thought the "dial tone" meant there was a problem. I have now ... & it's fine ! *doh* If they'd just said the dialling tone has changed ...

You need to uunplug your current 'phone cable from the wall and plug it into the hub.

Well yeah, I did plug the phone line into the router, as I posted ... just thought the different ring tone + not being able to "activate" the phone meant it wasn't going to work. I should've tried it before posting ... my bad LOL

That's fine, it can be confusing with wires and cables having to be connected to specific sockets and anything slightly unfamiliar can be concerning.

Doesn't that dial tone mean you have a message?

We ditched our landline years ago and now we have full fibre there isn't one. We have never missed it in the slightest. Who actually needs one these days?

bednobs, the ansaphone isn't flashing so no messages I don't think.

I don't use the landline mjwman, tho' I do get calls occasionally. Wish I could get rid of it but have to have it as part of the broadband package. Little bit rural so broadband options are limited for now.

CW, just because you pay for the line it doesn't mean you have to plug a phone in.  They won't care

Bednobs could be right about the message. Ring 1571 and see if there is one.

When mine changed Vodafone gave me an adapter to connect the phone to the hub.

 

Initally there was no dial tone - think that was while both the original BT socket connection and the VOIP connections were bot active.  After thr BT socket connection was turned off the phone works as normal

Yes broken tone means message on bt answer 1571 is the number to retrieve the message. Also changing to digital voice if your phone is not compatible bt supply a free phone. I don't have one my sister has nice phone very up to date features on it. 

Someone probably rang while the answer machine was disconnected.
