The car in front was some distance ahead of me when the barrier lifted and he drove through, having inserted his ticket.

When I got to the barrier it was still up. Big decision of the day - drive through and risk the barrier closing on me or wait?

What would you do?

Wait. What did you actually do?
Wait.
I've seen a lot of Youtube vids about those who were a tad impatient and the consequences for their haste. I'd defo wait.
Pay your fee unless you want a squashed bonnet and pay £100+
Do you drive a cabriolet? If so it would be like a game of whack a mole :-)
Soft top?
Convertible?
Hard top?
Safari LandRover?

(Would you like a convertible?)

;)
Wait a reasonable time, then if still up, chance it. After all, it'd be gross negligence if the barrier didn't have sensors. Someone could get killed.
I recall trying to beat a metal rising road ramp on the ramp leading down to the American Embassy. I was on a motorcycle and left stranded akimbo trying to keep upright. The US marine guard was killing himself laughing as he over rode the system and maintained he was not responsible and it was automatic. So was his 12 gauge pump shotgun so I got off lightly without a face full of 00 shot.

I had to pay inside the building and put the proof of payment ticket in to the barrier machine.
I was brave and drove straight through. It was still up when I drove past a few minutes later (one way system - had to go back on myself).

I have a non-converting old banger that is still dent and scratch free.
