Are there any proven cures for hangovers?

Leaving out the obvious trite answer - stay drunk! - the best 'cure' for a hangover is prevention. The condition called a 'hangover' is usually the result of dehydration in the body caused by intake of alcohol. In order to alleviate this condition, it is reccomneded that you drink at least a pint of fresh water before you go to sleep. Early on, before you start your consumption, have a light snack - food in the stomach slows down the abosrbtion of alcoholo which causes the dehydration. It is reccomended that you drink at a slow pace, and avoid mixing beers, wines and spirits, and stop when you feel pleasantly 'relaxed' rather than indulging in the peculiarly British habit of attempting to give yourself fatal alcohol poisoning. If you observe the above, you should minimise the risk, and effect of a hangover. If you do find yourself afflicted, drink plenty of fluids, eat a small plain snack when the nausea has passed, and sleep as much as possible,

Cynara herbal artichoke tablets, available over the counter at Boots or Tescos, also prevent hangovers. Take one before you start drinking, one before you go to bed, and one the next morning to feel the full benefit. If you are unsure of them, ask the pharmacist for more information on them
I get godawful hangovers and have managed to control them by taking 2 alka seltzer with a pint of water before bed. RESULT!
