“ I note that your principal strategy is to allow asylum applications to be made from abroad (…) Don’t you think that the UK government has a greater obligation towards those already here who are seeing their vital services deteriorate? Or should ever-increasing amounts of resources simply be diverted to accommodate the needs of the newcomers?”

no.

i do think that processing genuine asylum claims will help reduce illegal crossings yes as it will remove the ability of criminals to hide among genuine refugees… in terms of stopping the rest i do not believe it can be done lawfully without the co-operation of the french authorities… and that will come with costs… among those costs will be the acceptance of some genuine asylum seekers (through safe and legal routes of course)… but i don’t think that needs to be thought of as a damaging thing… this country is suffering major labor shortages and our housing deficiencies are self-inflicted… all we need to do is stop inflicting them.

at the moment france is not particularly inclined to help us because both sides have allowed relations to deteriorate over problems caused by brexit among other things. But if you want this problem solved then we can’t do it without french authorities.

The French will do nothing to help us, we give them millions yet the illegals are coming here in their droves, from safe countries. No one wants them, no one here wants them and quite frankly i am sick to death of seeing this country used as a dumping ground - I could say a lot more but what's the point.

// why do believe that people living in France should be able to claim asylum in the UK? //

Let us consider what happened in the EU.

Albeit contrary to EU laws around immigration, Hungary built a fence along its border with Serbia. It now requires all applications for asylum to be lodged at its embassy in Belgrade. This transfers the onus of holding those migrants until their status can be determined, on to the Serbian authorities.

Thus in an effort to alleviate overcrowding and insanitary issues (as outlined in the paragraph above), similarly claims made for asylum in France would in my view, expedite procedures here in the UK.

// do you believe they should be able to choose their destination of choice //

My own personal feelings tend to side with the argument that primarily, those fleeing persecution should claim asylum in the first country which is recognised as a safe haven.

However matters are complicated. There is no legal way to travel to the UK for the specific purpose of seeking asylum. Hence the small boats that arrive on UK shores.

Therefore the idea we can just send people back without their circumstances being considered is both irresponsible and unjust.

Notwithstanding that someone here on this board actually deals with UK asylum applications, then it's not up to OPs to determine the outcome of those migrants based on their (usually misinformed) opinions.

As stated previously; 'To walk a mile in someone else's shoes!'

sorry you just seem as though you want them here, no matter the overall cost. We should tow them back to France.
how many countries do they come through to get here i wonder, why can't they settle at the first one that's considered a safe country.
// the illegals are coming here in their droves //

There is no such thing as an ‘illegal’ asylum seeker.

Under international law, anyone has the right to apply for asylum in any country that has signed up to the 1951 UN Conventiion.
then it's time for us to withdraw from that. We are a joke.
we can’t tow them back to france… this would involve uk vessels entering french waters…

the illegal crossings cannot be stopped without french authorities… we simply cannot do it alone. If the french are “unwilling” to help then the government’s job is to dig in to why that is and to do something about it… we still have a very skilled cadre of diplomats… time for a charm offensive
the French don't want the problem and must turn a blind eye in most of these cases, " charm offensive", what the hell does that even mean.
// time for us to withdraw from that. //

Is it too much to ask for a system that is both effective in dealing with claims for asylum and at the same time, operates with fairness and within a framework that endeavours to promote this.

Let us remember, the UN has served to save millions of lives since being founded.
SpareEd. These post removals aren't about digression from the topic - that's a deflection. My perfectly valid post, (following that at 17:19 Sun 06th Nov) - containing factual information relating directly to the OP and supported by practically every major media outlet, including the BBC - was removed. Since it hasn't been reinstated I can only think the uncomfortable truth failed to align with the personal opinions of an unnamed, faceless, mod. You say that there are no lessons to be learned but whilst you continue to support and defend poor - and very often an appallingly disrespectful - standard of moderation, lessons should be learned - not least because that attitude only a week or so back almost led to a mass walkout of regular posters - people this site can ill-afford to lose. Frankly, I think it imperative that you decide what you actually want here because if AB is evolving, a critical - and brutally honest - eye needs to be kept upon the direction it's taking.
There's nothing wrong with AB, the problem lies with (some) sub-standard moderation.
it wasn't me Naomi, just so you know......
Group hug?
I know that, emmie. No worries.
AB may well be evolving, maybe AB needs to evolve?

What a shame for some.
