Why do property "experts" always rave about high ceilings? Surely if you have an extra four or six feet above head height it's just more unusable space to heat & makes redecorating that much more difficult. I just don't geddit!

Unlike with a low ceiling a high ceiling gives more scope in terms of lighting. A chandelier for example.

Yes chandeliers would add a touch of class to my dinner parties. I wouldn't get Del & Rodney in to clean them though!

Classic comedy!

A high ceiling would perhaps be better suited to accommodate a frieze of lavish design.

Imagine the amusement. As they were looking up admiring your ceiling's adornment/s, they'd be spilling soup down their fronts. Endless party fun.
It is now really a thing of the past that estate agents / so called experts cling onto for some reason. When these sort of houses were built, they also went in for grand decor, money no object.

Today uneconomical for your average buyer I would think in many ways like you say, heating is just one of them. But if you look at a lot of such houses, they also had massive fireplaces ( coal) that did heat such a large room. Well, that's my thoughts anyhow. Still nice to visit stately homes that have them, but like you say, note how cold they are.
I owned a GFF just like that in the 1980s. Loved it. It was beautiful. Had a cellar as well;-))
Not so much of an issue since 'a room' became 'a space' to property parasites warbling on the telly.

Much more important these days seems to be 'bringing the outside in' and 'those views'.

Don't even get me started on 'a good sized double' to describe a glorified cupboard.
The room where our club meets has a high ceiling. We sit in coats and gloves in the winter, despite the heaters being on. Hard to turn pages while wearing gloves!
Think of all the inaccessible spiders webs!

A couple of my friends moved into a barn conversion that had high, timbered ceilings upstairs. They ended up putting in false ceilings because it was so difficult to clean and it was cold.
Yes they all look great on tv. Its ok if you have plenty of cash to throw at these big homes.
Some of the very big rooms can cost a lot of money just to decorate.
