Not heard commentators talk about the similarity Putin's incorporation of areas of Ukraine into the motherland and Hitler's incorporation of the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia into the fatherland in 1938, the latter being a prelude to the destruction of the Czech state - exactly what Putin wants to achieve with Ukraine. Obvious parallels. Both border areas, with language and traditions more akin to the aggressor than with the host nation. Both events celebrated as liberating peoples, both a cynical device by manic dictators which, in Hitler's case, tipped the world into war.

can't argue with that!

can't argue with that!
In fact I haven't heard that, as there are really no similarities at all (for once)
One point of info: Kherson and Zaporizhzhya are not "border areas" : the former is from Putin's point of view but not anyone else's)
We should not go overboard about this (tho I fear we will)
This is a desperate move by a desperate man: Sudetenland was planned well in advance.
These "referendums" (more correctly "events") were originally scheduled for early September but were cancelled. Then uncancelled. They don't change anything, unlike the Sudetenland
These territories were invaded months, in some cases years ago.
Tho was it said "comparisons are odious?"*
At best many are a distraction.

*Oscar W- I might have remembered! ....
Well, I just did!
Added to which Hitler had a large, fresh battle-ready army at his disposal. Putin's is already war weary , battered and reduced to enlisting convicts and anyone else who hasn't fled the country.
This is done in a desperate attempt to claim a victory at home. The break up of Ukraine, which he might have wanted before and may still do, is an even more distant dream now.
I think the parallels are valid though clearly Putin's ability to pursue his ambitions is much lower than Hitler's was.
The best we can hope for is the stage caves in.
Plus the Sudetenland was largely German

:-)
I don't want to rub it in but ... (from BBC)
"When Vladimir Putin’s spokesman was asked to clarify today where exactly Russia’s new "borders" would lie, he said he would "have to check". "

Senator, you're no Adolf Hitler ...

I didn't say it was a perfect parallel but there are clearly similarities. Putin's on the box in five mins so it will be interesting to hear what he says.

Will it? A complete pack of lies and jingoistic sabre-rattling poorly disguised as the truth?

Fatt: Of course it will a load of rollocks. I just said it would be an interesting load of rollocks.
Ah, ToraToraTora is on the BA hunt again, as if that endorses his own views and those of the ‘very similarly-minded’ that are about on here at the same time.
Sad.
I'm not watching it.
I'll catch the highlights.

Interestingly, as well as admitting he hadn't a clue where russia's imagined new borders in Kherson and Zaporizhzhya are, Peskov also claimed that Donetsk and Luhansk's annexation applied only to the old DPR and LPR. Which occupy less than half of the respective regions.

Putin's speech, so far, and his audience are ridiculously Stalinist.

Putin now says the US is occupying Germany.
Did Hitler take a poll ?
Not to my knowledge O_G. I also thought it was a reasonable comparison - not perfect, but what is? I know that when Putin first started making moves Mr. J2 and I both thought of the Sudetenland.
There are a lot of basic parallels.

Did he forget to mention the Nazis?
