what is the significance of the sparrow or swallow tattoo?

Meanings of tattoos vary with social custom, so I dont pretend this is a definitive answer, but the sparrow/swallow did mean that the wearer had done time. Bird. Geddit?

My thoughts are that it was worn by sailors as a sign of returning home (the swallow being migatory and returning to Britain each year.

This was a popular tattoo with sailors who used it for good luck - on a long voyage the sight of a bird meant land was nearby.
