ichy; As you know, for historic reasons & more, I disagree with any attempt to take Crimea by Ukraine, & though I approve of his other actions, I think Zelenskyy is leading the world dangerously towards a nuclear disaster.

With Putin, he is dealing with an unstable, & unstoppable madman, backed by at least 50% of the Russian population who, starved of any real information, & being subjected to continual lies & propaganda, still believe this to be a justifiable war.
Unstoppable? He's been stopped many times in this war, and still being stopped.
^^ I mean from within.

So far we know that if you show strength to Putin he backs down.
For too long we have let him call the shots. And reacted rather than setting the agenda.
So it’s refreshing to see Ukraine actually grabbing the *** by the balls. It’s Ukraine that pays the price for this every time with cowardly attacks on civilians But the price if not doing it will be far, far higher
Question Author
And I dont think Putin is an unstable madman at all. He’s a gangster.
So far he has been depressingly/reassuringly predictable.
We shall see, I hope I'm wrong, but I fear there will be some terrible retaliation.

the fact that Stalin deported the Crimean Tatars and put Russians there ( Crimea) doesnt make it Russian
( Trump thought it did)

stalin put minorities into all his grateful liberated territories so he cd do such as this

simples

the problem was ( but so what) Zelensky's predecessor was very pro Russian and Putin didnt like the wind of change. 80% Ukraine did
Question Author
Zelensky’s predecessor minus two PP.

The history of Russia’s claim on Crimea is irrelevant. Russia commandeered Crimea at gunpoint in 2014 and we thought we’d advanced from that ok the 21st century.
Crimea is particularly vulnerable to recapture: if Kherson falls and the Kerch bridge is blown they’ll be cut off. Especially as the Black Sea fleet has now largely skeddadled to Novorissijsk
PP & to whom it may concern; Russia's claim to Crimea goes back considerably further than Joe Stalin;

Its historical links with the peninsula go back to Catherine the Great in the 18th Century, when Russia conquered southern Ukraine and Crimea, taking them from the Ottoman Empire. In 1954, Crimea was handed to Ukraine as a gift by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, who was himself half-Ukrainian. Only 10 years earlier, Joseph Stalin had deported Crimea's entire Tatar population, some 300,000 people, allegedly for co-operating with Hitler's Germany.

Nikita Khrushchev transferred Crimea to the jurisdiction of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic in 1954, but the circumstances surrounding that transfer are somewhat vague, it was done at a meeting in which no minutes were taken.

When Ukraine became independent in 1991, Russian President Boris Yeltsin agreed that Crimea could remain in Ukraine, with Russia's Black Sea fleet remaining at Sevastopol under lease. That lease was in recent years extended to 2042.
