People have been left outraged after a Tory MP stated poverty-hit Brits who have been forced to turn to food banks "cannot budget" and "cannot cook properly." Conservative Lee Anderson was speaking at the Commons as a debate was taking place about the Queen's Speech, when he claimed people had the ability to "cook meals from scratch" for "30p a day" instead.

In response, Jack Monroe wrote: "You can't cook meals from scratch with nothing. You can't buy cheap food with nothing. The issue is not "skills", it's 12 years of Conservative cuts to social support. The square root of f*** all is still going to be f*** all, no matter how creatively told to dice it.

The main cause of poverty is the Tory Party.
Benefit claimants having to wait weeks to claim UC after losing their jobs, for one.
Ive give up even having to talk about this with conservatives. Just wait until you have to stand in line waiting for a (humiliating) food parcel.
But of course you wont ever have to because you have been lucky enough in life to have had a well paid job and have enough put by for a rainy day.
Johnson was in my home city of Stoke yesterday talking about training high skilled workers in order that they could earn a better wage.
Please tell me how I could be better at the job that I do already?
(Delivery driver)
How could a toilet cleaner be any more highly skilled?
Or a checkout opperative?
Or a warehouse worker?

The country would grind to a halt without these people,
Rubbish nailit - and don't tell me I'm lucky. I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth - far from it. I made choices in life - and so did you.

Incidentally, the country would grind to a halt without the people who work 24/7 to build the businesses that generate the nation's wealth too. Without them there would be no checkout operatives or delivery drivers or warehouse workers because without them there would be no jobs.
Oh, and by the way, nailit, without businesses there would be no benefits or NHS either because no one would be paying taxes. Perhaps time for a re-think?
Agree with Naomi above. A young friend referred to me as rich a few days ago. (Not in a rude way). She judged me because we own our nice home, I speak well and we spend a lot on food, which we cook ourselves!! She has no idea of our roots or how hard we worked and our parents before us. I lived on a council estate as a child and through to my teens. I know all about families struggling. My parents had a very, very tight budget, as did we initially.

I don't disagree with food banks. But they should be better controlled and not used for those who have seemingly chosen a benefit lifestyle. I would never donate to foodbanks. but I do support charities and organisations who help genuine cases of need. Not those that go to foodbanks and still smoke, make frequent visits to pubs, etc. and make no effort to do otherwise.
Miss Terious...foodbanks are controlled. Well, they are in my city in the West Country.
A voucher is required, for which you need to apply. Your individual needs and situation is discussed, and you are put in touch with the relevant agency. It's certainly not a matter of walking in off the street and walking out with a weeks groceries. If I'm not mistaken its about 5 days worth...sorry,just checked...its three days. These "are" genuine cases, in spite of what so many think...and smoking does not mean people and their families should be denied food.
Pasta I can't agree.

/The price of a pack of 20 cigarettes in supermarkets varies between £8.80 to £13.50./

That was last October. I believe they have gone up since.

If people can afford that and use food banks, to me that is so wrong and shameful, As is drinking regularly in pubs. Their priorities surely are wrong.

While I accept the applicants shouldn't spend on cigarettes, I'm betting most roll their own. I'm also mindful of the fact that smoking is both habit and addiction. Not a case for saying...sorry but you and your family cannot have help because you smoke.

You do realise that the charities and organizations you'd rather support are the same organisations that give out vouchers...to possibly undeserving smokers?

Also, where are the numbers that state that users of food banks also frequent pubs?

I used to work for a local charity that helped primarily the homeless, but also any others who were in need. Though I wasn't a support worker, I do know vouchers were not given out at the drop of a hat, and there was a limit and time frame as to how many and how often.
