Melv South Shields is nice as well, lovely Victorian park to walk around and a lovely seafood restaurant at the end called, rather grandly, the 'Colmans Seafood Temple'

I agree about South Shields. It also has a fairground on the Sea Front if you have kids.

Had a great weekend topped off with a visit to Durham.
The only downside was paying £18-50 for fish and chips twice and a portion of peas:-(
