I agree with some of the early posts on this thread - like a lot of Cheating Czechs earlier in the day, Sterling went down as if Tasered when the impact was minimal and inadvertent - fortunately the ref was brighter (or less bent) than the one who fell for the dud Czechs.
//Judge, the World Cup has always had a group stage, ever since the very first tournament in 1930.//

Yes I know. It doesn't make it any less ridiculous. There may have been some justification in 1930 as international travel was not easy. But it is now (Covid aside) and travelling a few thousand miles to play a football match is no great shakes. As it is eight of the teams will be eliminated after playing three matches so there's little difference. As for the fans, if they're daft enough to travel all over the place to watch second rate sport then whether they watch one or three matches is neither here nor there.
It's personal choice. You're a cricket man, the Barmy Army follow England all around the world, and are pften treated to spineless displays by the England team. Would you accept the Ashes being changed to a one-off test match?

Like the cricket, supporting a football team is largely about hope. With three matches, you can lose one, and still be in with a chance of winning the main prize. A one-off knockout game takes that away from the supporters.
// you can lose one, and still be in with a chance of winning the main prize. //

there's nothing quite like an England supporter's clutching-at-straws statistical analysis of the team's chances of progressing...... :-D
Mushy, I wasn't really thinking about England then, just a generalisation.
THECORBYLOON
ROY, I think you will find that Scotland's goal difference is -2.

Will you be English on Tuesday if Scotland get knocked out?
Nah,Roy.Corby lives in England,loves Wee Burney,hates the English,go figure...
ROY, no I'll not.
Well, we've been glued to the radio for some days listening to the wonderful England vs. India Test Match. I suppose I should add for clarity that this was between the women's teams, but the commentators weren't so patronising and several thought it was the best they's seen in ages - no matter what gender. Very good match. Wish it were on t.v. that we could access. :(
Unfortunately for you, you will be. (I didn't ask if you be supporting England)
Sounds good to me Jourdain. One day test matches ok,but these long drawn out games that go on for days *** me off.
Ynna, it was Day 4 of the England/India test match, and they still didn't get a definitive result.

I hope the England team watched the Portugal/Germany game this evening. They might've got some idea on how to play the game entertainingly.
I hope the England team watched the Portugal/Germany game

Not the team but the manager who picks the team.
