are there any really good websites allowing the user to search a word and find the roots and history of that word.

the best results i've had si far (by far) have been from wikepedia - which is fantastic, just wondered if if there existed any -more specialised- etymological sites?

Online Etymological Dictionary and
Your Dictionary are two online sources I use.
If you're interested in etymology I would strongly recommend the book Ologies and Isms by Michael Quinion.
