We have Grand mother, Grand daughter Grand son so why is Grand dad spelt Grandad?
I've always spelt it with 2 d's, Granddad, but my daughter says it's only spelt with 1 d, but surely that would make it Gran dad, if you know what I mean. Doesn't make sense to me.

No, Cryptical, Grandad is NOT the correct spelling, it can be spelt Granddad or Grandad quite acceptably!
"Grandad" is one spelling, it's not the "correct" spelling.
All my grandkids have, when they were younger, of course, called me 'gangan'.
I believe i used to spell it with the two 'ds' but it never looked right (unless hyphenated) so i spell it grandad now. I n fact, i've just written the word in my grandson George's birthday card. Not that he will know, he's only 2. :-)
We've had grandma, grandad, nanna, amma, afi and langamma, with those spellings. 2 d's makes some sense, but I've rarely seen it like that.
me and barsel then....

CHRIS, Chambers Dictionary shows both spellings.
nuff said barsel, lol
I once overheard a conversation between two men, one of whom wondered why native English speakers are such poor linguists. Even when you laboriously demonstrate the pronunciation of a simple foreign word over and over again, they still can't copy it correctly, he said. He went on to warn against ever agreeing to give out the spelling of the word in question, that would permanently prevent its correct pronunciation.

Yes, said the other. Babies who are being encouraged by their parents to say the universal "Mama" and "Papa" ask "How do you spell it ?" and get it wrong, hence Mummy and Daddy.

I still can't understand why there are 2 d's in Grand daughter but not Grand dad. Anyway as THECORBYLOON says, it can be spelt both ways which means that either way is fine, it's just a personnel preference.
mama and papa is very posh, or so it seems to me. I always called my mother, mum.
My wife is Gran-Gran to ours. (So good, they named her twice!)
Ha, I'm called Grandaddy !
It
I had a Granma, never Grandma.
I was waiting for someone to post that CaC. Took a while :-)
