Is there such a word as 'milling' and if so what does it mean? I used it the other day saying 'Theres lots of people milling around up there' and the person who I was with didn't understand.

Yea, indeed, verily, it is so: for veritably my dikshunry (Oxford Reference Dictionary 1996 second edition) sayeth unto the reader thus:

millverb. intransitive. (often followed by about, around)(of people or animals) move in an aimless manner, especially in a confused mass.

The person you were with who didn't understand what you meant obviously need to tuck his/her blanks more often.
Be carefull the slang meaning in the army means when the troops are told to get in the boxing ring and batter the living daylights out of each other their arms going round like windmills-milling
Also a manufacturing process (cotton, steel, etc) or to remove or shape metal, wood, etc in a milling machine.

Milling is a manufacturing process used in CNC machining. The general/simple process of milling is to gradually remove excess metal from a workpiece to get it to look a certain way or as a refined good.

We have an entire article about the entire milling process as well as the financing required for it that I urge you to take a look at to be better versed in the topic:
