For months now, if not years, I have seen ads for and heard about flights to NY for around 200. Now that I actually want to go, I can't find anything for under 400. Where am I going wrong?

There could be several reasons for your difficulty. First, there's your date of travel; if it's in the near future, you're in the high season when prices are correspondingly higher. Then there's the question of how and where you are looking for your ticket(s); I've always found newspaper and teletext ads quite unreliable; and it's a lot easier to find cheap flights in London than the provinces. You may be better off trying to book online; I've just been looking at the fairly new website Opodo - http://www.opodo.com/ - and there seem to be return flights to NY for around 300.
Keep trying!!!! I've recentley booked a flight with the above mentioned Opodo for 7 of us to travel to NYC in August for 198 each flying with Virgin Atlantic. These flights are few and far between during the high season and it took weeks of being on the net for hours at a time to find this flight. What you should also tke note of is that Opodo often changes the prices at any given time, I know this because when I tried to book another seat at the same price some hours later the price went from 198 to 567. You could also try booking a flight in the low season, you are more likely to find those magic 200 fares although they may be non direct flights with airlines like Air France, Air India, American Airlines and Air Kuwait. Good luck!
