Had to take Little Tiggs to A&E yesterday. Over the last few months since lockdown he has been bleeding when going to the toilet and has had some tummy aches every now and again. Our GP prescribed movicol in June which he was taking reluctantly due to the taste. Everything seemed to go back to normal, although there was still a bit of bleeding, until Wednesday night when he went to the loo and there was quite a lot of fresh blood coming out. I was quite worried and rang the GP first thing yesterday. She referred us straight to A&E.

Blood tests were done and they ruled out all inflammatory things like crohns and colitis. The paediatrician said there was nothing to worry about and that it was due to constipation and straining. He's never had this problem and is usually regular. He eats plenty of fruit and veg and has always got a bottle of water with him wherever he is which I fill up.

But what causes so much bleeding? As I said this has been going on for a few months now.

As long as you keep calm and reassure him that bottoms just like fingers or toes can get little cuts that bleed he should hopefully worry less.

Yes that's a very good way to explain it Mamy.
My child had bleeding when he was about 5 years old and the paediatrician out a camera down there and had a look and couldn't find anything wrong. So they prescribed Movicol and drink plenty of water. We also gave him lots of banana and soft food to eat for a few months. Then everything was ok.

Glad to hear everything was ok in the end OldChestNuts.
Sorry to hear this Tigger, hope it can be sorted soon.
As adults we can deal with it

as a parent, I'd be nervous, the same as you.
I had similar symptoms two years ago, and had to have a colonoscopy, though it might not be done on a ten-year-old.
As an adult I would be terrified of blood from the rear end.

Some years ago I had just moved into a new job within Civil Service - I was having a shower and couldn't believe the blood that was pouring down my legs - it frightened me so much that I did go to my doctor that morning and he said it was polyps which it was after a colonoscopy eventually but blood from the anus frightens me so
much - mind you blood from anywhere within me frightens me. I hope little Tigger is ok.
