Retro, they have cures for your malady. A notable one is Italian: It's called "Innuendo":)
I much prefer the Indian cure. It's called Vindaloo . :-)
Remember watching a docu quite some years ago about what can get contaminated when flushing the loo. Particularly in the small loos which we in terraced houses have. Anything and everything that you have in, on or above the sink is at risk. I've always put the seat down before flushing since I watched that.
That's why you should rinse your toothbrush before you use it.
Daughter with Chemistry degree from Durham says 'ignore' so I will.
retrocop - // He went into the waiting room after surgery to lock the front door and saw a large rat crawling out the toilet bowl. Thereafter he was chasing round the house ensuring the toilet seats were down after use. //

It is not more likely that the rat was already in the house and simply fell into the bowl?

Toilet outlet pipes are an average of four inches wide, with a ninety-degree bend in them - it would take something pretty tempting to convince a rat to climb up one into a dwelling. I suggest that, in common with spiders, the rat simply got lost exploring the house, rather than being tempted up a sewage pipe.
There speaks someone who's never used the expression 'like a rat up a drainpipe'.

A drainpipe is fresh, usually has running water through it, and it's straight.

Doesn't really compare with a foul waste pipe with a ninety-degree bend in it - does it?

I don't suppose this fits with your expert opinion but I'll live.

No need for sarcasm.

I didn't claim to have an 'expert opinion', I merely pointed out what I believed to be logical.

I have not lasted this long on AB without a willingness to be educated and corrected, sometimes at the same time.

Thanks for both.
There is no such thing in plumbing as a 90 degree bend. The two pipes joined together might eventually be at right angles to each other; however, there is an elbow connecting the two, but there is no 90 degree angle at the junction.

Thank you - another incorrect impression corrected.
