the first line of his wikipedia entry:

"He supported and endowed schools, almshouses, hospitals and churches in Bristol, London and elsewhere. Many of his charitable foundations survive to this day" - yes he was a Slave trader but at that time so was the world and his wife. Many slave traders were black Africans. Not saying that excuses it but that was how it was at the time. Seems a little over the top to topple his statue 300 years after his death.

Margaret of Burgundy ( portrait by Holbein) passed up the chance of no 7 = " if I had two necks I would gladly give one to the King of England"
Maybe equality in education might reduce the number of misguided attacks. Maybe replace the statue with a simple plaque giving his history his good works and an acknowledgement of how his money was earned including the slave trading and how by today's standards this is wrong.

A person who of his time did not behave inappropriately should not be tried and found guilty post mortem rather be a tool to teaching changing values.

"They defaced the Lincoln Memorial in the US, yesterday. " - just shows what morons they are, Lincoln fought the Civil war to end Slavery.
> Probably not upsetting to the indigenous white people of Bristol

Further proof of the very attitude that Black Lives Matter maintains exists in this country. From a former police officer, no less. And you wonder why they protest, and what they're protesting about?
They were making a big fuss that a petition had been raised to remove the statue. Only 2% of the Bristol population signed it so since when was it minority rule.
Playground politics, CaC.

They want to take the Imperial from ICL.
And Kings from wherever that is.
They'll never be sated, these people.
Unfortunately, as Laurence Fox illustrated on Question Time a few weeks back, being born white is a crime against humanity and no white person will ever be acquitted of it whilst this nonsense is allowed to persist.

I liked the way the Bristol Chief Superintendent declared that his force had taken an "active decision" to allow the criminal damage committed by the marauding mob to continue unchecked. I look forward to a similar "active decision" being taken when they come round to investigate why I've got seven people in my back garden having tea and cakes. Of course my activities will be a far greater threat to peace and wellbeing that the Bristol rioters.
when they come round to investigate why I've got seven people in my back garden having tea and cakes

which they won't, if only because they're so stretched that they're all policing protests. Protests are manna from heaven for scofflaws...
He had a Pride lanyard, that cop. Just saying.
