Could someone read me through how to do the following question. I understand this type of question with names or sign posts to various places involves giving number values to vowels and consonants. What puzzles me is how do you elucidate when the values are always positive as presumably they could be negative. Trial and error? Also where the question asks for logically does this mean it is not possible to get the answer by algebraic equation. If ANNE = 13 , HANNAH = 18, KENNETH = 22 LILIAN = 12 , Maxine = 17, logically MAXINE = ? Thanks.

I can't help you with the general part of your question but in this particular example count the number of straight lines in each word.
