It does make you wonder about these research centres. If you take someone like David Attenborough, ( and yes I would think he's had hundreds of inoculations) who as been all over the world many times in very close proximity to thousands of animals, even venturing into bat caves many times, walking in their dropping, including the vast crew that accompany him, I don't ever recall him going down with a un-heard of virus,or any other.
"Something has caused the virus to become quite prominent in Northern Italy"

Yes - the utter incompetence of the Italian authorities in tracing the initial importer(s) of the virus from China. They have compromised the whole of Western Europe by their staggeringly lax and shockingly dilatory response to the first few cases.

This has then been exacerbated by the total disregard for any concept of 'minor personal inconvenience for the greater public good' exhibited by the Italian population. I'm basing this assertion not just on reported incidents, but also on a national stereotype - but then stereotypes are oh so often based in truth ...

The real problem for Italy is that this time they don't have the option they routinely exercise when up against an implacable opponent - just change sides and align with the winner ...
Ouch!
I think the Chinese are vile and disgusting in their eating habits and animal husbandry (if one can call it that) and it's no surprise that this disease started there. Pity we can't cut them off from the rest of the world and let them drift away!
It might be that its more prominent in Italy because its such a to do list as a holiday hot spot. Simple as that.
Presumably it’s because there were carriers at large for a while with no one knowing
@12.19 and that seems to be one of the main problems with virus I believe, it takes a long while to really show its ugly head, before you know you've been carrying it.
I read somewhere that Italy has a very high number of elderly people. Maybe that has something to do with the high incidences of the virus and number of deaths.
