It a nice world China should be forced to tighten their hygiene laws, most viruses originate from those Far East countries, I heard it said this started in Wuhan because of dirty hygiene
The Pope needs allmof his bells and smells to perform one of his infallible miracles, and get Holy Mary to assist.
We were supposed to be in Venice this weekend but decided not to travel. We lost the cost of the flights but avoided a long period of quarantine - which we thought was probably on the cards - instead.
A wise move Toorak
Bobbi, Although I would tend to agree with you about hygiene in China, strangely and with no intention of a connection at al.... there is one of if not the only biological Research centre two miles from Wuhan market.

Toorak, Venice is in lockdown.
I know - so relieved we decided not to go.

Yes I've known this for a week or two, casa. I'm still inclined to believe the problem was caused by the Chinese eating just about anything that moves, it being bought and sold in the most disgusting conditions. But you never know.
I wonder if crowded churches were part of the reason the Italians are having such a bad time of it now
//Never mind "don't want to worry you". This looks more suspicious by the day. The city of Wuhan where the virus outbreak began is the home of not one but two level 4 biohazard labs. In 2017 scientists from outside China warned that these labs were not secure and that a virus might escape from the the facilities. The virus itself has certain hallmarks of being engineered. Bats and snakes are used at these labs for "research". Think I will worry just a bit.//

That'll be why they are quarantining areas there. And what do the people do ? Rush out of the areas before it happens, spreading the virus as far as they can.
It's plausible a lab might be involved, especially given censorship of the issue on the internet is being claimed to have occurred in January, long before any official admission of a problem. One hopes that's not the case though.
Man’s folly will be the undoing of mankind.
Nobody making the connection between hotspots and noodles/spaghetti yet?

Obviously regular flu which kills 17,000 Brits annually is not the result of our appalling hygiene and disgusting food.
Viruses are spread by coughing and sneezing, and nothing to do with personal hygiene. Livestock markets are not a cause of contagion because of the animals, but because they are busy places with hundreds of people breathing germs on one another.
Livestock markets are, actually, a cause of viruses transferring from animals.
That is almost certainly what caused the outbreak in China, and then you have the added problem of huge humbers of people spreading it quickly (with of course the fact that to start with no one knows about it)
Adam Kamradt-Scott, associate professor specializing in global health security at the University of Sydney, says “It’s not simply a matter of the consumption of exotic animals per se, so we need to be mindful of picking on or condemning cultural practices.”

It is not the eating of the animals that transmits the viruses. It is association with them. The animals breath the same air we do, and that is how transmission occurs.
Something has caused the virus to become quite prominent in Northern Italy must be a reason for it. Maybe the age of the average person and the amount of smokers?
