What gets me is how these dart players can quickly adjust the maths mentally in their heads , when they hit a number they didn't want to , when trying to check out
We used to play a lot of cribbage when I was younger. But we played All Fours, "Nap", and Don much more and always for money. Ferocious games as well. God help you if you messed up. Some of those old miners took it proper serious. A game of skittles could be like war zone as well. :))
never managed a 9 DF, did 11 ,many times, I was an alright club player once, did several 161 and 167, checkouts but my favourite check out of all time was 152, most would go T20 T20 D16 but I always attempted T20, T14, Bull!
A lot of players do learn the check outs by rote Baz. But they have to do the subtraction for themselves when at the oche. I think that is what some of them are doing when they hesitate. ASlways amazed me that the lad who was hopeless at maths at school could get on ythe oche and add and subtract in his head like a computer. The marker is only allowed to tell you what bed the dart is in and cannot do the sums for the player.....I think. It was that way when we played.
In tournament play you can ask the referee to do the sums for you if you wish, albeit at the cost of your throwing rhythm:

"A Player at the Oche is entitled to consult with the Referee on the amount scored or required at any time during a throw. However, the Player shall not be advised on how to finish."
