//A door "owns" it's own doorknob//

it does, but as written it doesn't make sense, because the apostrophe in this case denotes a contraction.

A door "owns" it is own doorknob? really?
//For abbreviations I tend to use eg, TVs, HGVs etc. //

As it should be - and no gap between word and exclamation mark - regardless of what OG's primary school teacher said- and no apostrophe in its - even if the door does 'own' its doorknob. An apostrophe there renders 'it's' an abbreviation of 'it is'. I've heard that apostrophe called a 'tombstone' - there in place of a dead letter. ;o)
Where's Eddie when you actually need him!!!!
having spent a lifetime in the printing industry, placing a space before ! ? . , ; : ' would have got you thrashed within an inch of your life

Scooping up all the exclamation marks. Quick, grab 'em before they all disappear!
Of course a door possesses it's own doorknob. Unless the owner of the door has nicked it and fitted it to themselves.
Apostrophes have multiple meanings. It's the reader that can misinterpret and read it as "it is".
Language evolves - most punctuation is becoming obsolete per se , being mainly used for emoticons ;-) ;-) ;-) ;-)
OG, it's does mean it is, there is no other interpretation.

//The Apostrophe Protection Society has just folded after two years.//

It has been taken over by the Society for the Abolition of the Spurious Apostrophe (SASA) of which I am the founder and so far only member.
I loved Victor Borge. Used to have a 45 record with the punctuation thing on and played it many, many times.
With regard to the OP - I would have thought it would have been better if he had said "and shall continue to do so". (Although that's not the question).
This is so wearying, I might lapse into a comma.
