I know this should probably be over in food and drink but I want to cook a small gammon joint for my tea and thought on here may be quicker. It weighs 0.862kg and the instructions are 30mins per 500g plus 30 mins.I'm useless with metric weight and wondered if someone can tell me how long in total I need to cook it for? Thanks in advance.

30 mins per 500g
so 6 mins per 100g
so 6 x8.62 as you have 862g
Then add 30 mins
divide 0.862 by 0.5, multiply by 30, then add 30, giving a total of approx. 82min
0.862Kg = 862 grams. 862/500 approx 1.7, so 1.7 x 30 = 51 mins + 30 mins. About 1hr 20 mins.
Or to cut out the longer calculations, it's getting on for double 500g, so approaching an hour. Say 55 minutes. Then add on 30 mins. So 85 mins.
Mrs. bookbinder says: cook it for 1½ hours.
That's 1.9 lbs so approx 1 hr 30 mins

Thanks for showing all your working out, means absolutely nothing to me.:-( Going with 1hr 20mins - 1hr 30mins and then you have to stand it for another 30mins so better go and get the oven on. Thanks for all your help x
Gosh that seems a lot of oven time for a small joint of gammon. I would bring it to the boil in a large pan of water, boil for 30 mins, remove into baking tray cover with mustard or honey and bake at 180 for 30minutes then leave to rest about 10 mins. I find gammon is often dry when totally oven baked.

AuntPollyGrey. Unfortunately, I can't cope with pans of water due to arthritis in my hands. x
Sorry Barsel. Then I suggest putting a little water in the bottom of the roasting tin to stop it drying out.

Thanks for the tip, will try that. x
