Number Plates, Do We Need A Suppliers Post Code Or Not?

Ok I spoke to a dealer the other day and he swore blind that legally your number plate must have a post code. First i've heard of it. Now the law itself goes into great detail of everything from spacing to layout etc but post code is not mentioned neither is the supplier.

Now I know registered suppliers do have post codes but there are a lot of suppliers of what they call "show plates" that do supply road legal ones (as well as all the fancy illegal ones). Anyway my plates are legal in every detail of what the law says but I do not have a post code. Can anyone clarify, thanks.

I think, but I don't know, it may apply to new unregistered cars, sure I saw it on a police program a little while ago. Some guys plate was not spaced out as it should, and he tried to be clever with the cop, so the cop nit picked other things he could do him for the plate if he wanted to. They really just want a plate that's spaced out right.

I was aware of the requirement for a supplier to put their postcode on.

However googling the current MOT test, I find that testers are specifically told they are not required to check for it.

My suspicion is that a previous requirement has been recently dropped.

HC useful leaflet, interesting that it does not mention the Post code in the main statute. Hoppy, yes I have had many cars and bikes pass the MOT with no Postcode etc on.

Have a closer look at your plates, Tora.

It is usually as a barely visible etching rather than clear printing.
