I am something of a begginer as far as my knowledge of funk and sould are concerned. Can anyone recommend some good stuff? [Along the lines of James Brown / Herbie Hancock - not particularly taken by 70's star-shaped sunglasses and fake afros..

I'd try "Funk drops", volumes 1& 2. These are excellent, and even better; only about 7 each! Naturally, these are in the Funk vein. Soul from that period tends to be a bit hit & miss. I'd go for a cd on Kent called "at the club" - really decent 60's soul - a good introduction to soul that's not too heavy or wild. Good luck
Check out"New orleans funk" on soul jazz records. It includes artists like The meters,Eddie bo, and Allen toussant etc Eddie bo's"Hook and sling",included on this cd,is one mad funk tune! All about the drummer!
