Pleased that the caring UK have now nursed this boy back to full health, but after all he is still an illegal immigrant, and as such should he now be deported back to Vietnam?

/// Oh yeah, and what happens if immigrant or even natives refuse to do national service? ///

It was a criminal offence and one could be sent to jail, unless one became a conscientious objector and their reason for being so was accepted.

/// It's 2019. can't be shooting people against a wall. ///

As already been pointed out in 2 separate posts, guns are designed to kill people, even in 2019.
Another strange thing about this story is that the events happened about a year ago, and it's only being reported...Curiouser and curiouser.
Sanmac,I think the news item is more about the letter he wrote rather than the smuggling.
I would like to hear the whole story.
I really can't see that the news item is solely about the letter. Anyway, the letter will no doubt evoke the typically British emotive responses of "Aw, bless." and "Well done, that boy." which will sort of detract from the fact than he in in the country illegally, and if indeed his family are already here it would be logical to assume that they also are in the country illegally.
it has been done before
AB will divide into the usual - "what dat" and 'foo when dat' with a light smattering of 'I knew dat'

Henry "Box" Brown (c. 1815 – June 15, 1897) was a 19th-century Virginia slave who escaped to freedom at the age of 33 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate in 1849 to abolitionists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. For a short time, Brown became a noted abolitionist speaker in the northeast United States. (wiki)

Phong Is a crap name if he wants to intergrate.

Sam Sonite is far more Anglicised. He should rename to that.
Gromit, this case is not meant to be taken lightly; however, if you wish to carry-on in this fashion suit yourself.

Phong stinks, I agree

what about - - - Wun long Run ? he cd pass as a chinese.... - er Viet being a southern border to China and they were only at war once in the last century, altho they expelled the Chinese in 1050. [famous sea/river battle called hu Dun dat or something]
no really
At the Battle of Bạch Đằng River in 938 near Hạ Long Bay in Viet, rebel forces, led by Ngô Quyền defeated the invading army of China and ended centuries of Chinese domination.
If he'd had a couple of thousand fags and some brandy along side him in the case he'd have got short shrift from the guardians of our borders.
Instead he wins a prize.
