What's the chances of us getting involved in this?

Nil, other than perhaps in a diplomatic sense.
This is astonishing... Brave brave police officer for not pulling the trigger. He easily could have

How the officers drops to his knees after, he knew his life was in danger, he knew he could have just taken one.
Wonder if he'd have pulled the trigger had the protesters not ran away as soon as he pulled his gun from it's holster?
Urmm.. after he pulled the gun, there was a few seconds he could have fired whilst they were still at him but he chose not to..

Who knows what went through his head!
Who knows what went through his head when he stupidly turned his back on them at the beginning of the clip? I believe he was in danger of no more than a good kicking, to be honest. No doubt he will exact revenge next time he is on duty facing the protesters.
// The people of Hong Kong seem to have overlooked the fact that they live in China //

Yes. China doesn't do compromise or acquiescence. It does crushing. Resistance will be crushed.
So are these protests about poor human rights?
Do you really not know what the reason is?
If China retaliated as heavily as we all expect, I fear a generation will be wiped out or at the very least...crushed. So sad.
It related. It's about trying to circumvent the two systems agreement. Mainland China isn't trusted and the attempt to get Hong Hong residents extradited to the mainland where no one trusted what would happen to them.

Anyone with any sense should have got out by now, but it's not easy to emigrate to nations that see no value in welcoming more incomers.
// Are we seeing a terrestrial abduction? And will there be more to follow? //

lumme no ! - we are seeing civil protest against a change in the law.

// Another example of everyone rubbing along nicely when it was a British Protectorate or dare I say 'Colony'.//
um yes no ish - 100% of the chinese wanted hong Kong to return to mainland China in 1997
( thieves , pirates were words applied by common chinese to the British oo-er officer !) - I mean closing the English language secondary schools were looked on as a great cultural victory.
and the whites were going like: "you have no idea what awaits you"

and now they do ....

Exactly. But honour and one's word as a Britisher must be sacrosanct. The date of transfer arrived. I bet it's not only the citizens of HK are unhappy with their lot since they gladly waved by to their colonial oppressors and accepted partition .

nil and we always knew this - Fat Pang ( now Lord Patten bless) did his best - we are giving you a great jewel
Chinee negotiator - excooth me - it is not yours to give....

and the idea was to have two systems - the hong kongers would be left to make more lots and lots of moolah so long as the top table in Peking got a cut
and it kinda has broken down

anyone remember Mrs Pandit ? (*) She was traipsing around the colonial office in the sixties saying that the India Office had betrayed XYZ and Mrs Pandit of course, along with the Independence of India Act 1947 . And the British govt unsurprisingly did not give a toss.

(*) mrs Pandit - who she den?

I have met no Indian or Pakistani who thought they were better off under the British such is the draw of 'Freedom!'

Egyptians - yes a lot - in 1956 ( this is a reprise of a post no one read the last time) Egypt had the highest standard of living in the arab world and by 1980 it was the lowest ( oil really )
This was coupled with the idea that Nasser was an incorruptible member of the Young Officers - and er was the only one. Sadat ( assassinatedd 1980 ) was one of the them, I learnt later
So there was an idea that Egypt was better place under the British.
They also swapped the British for the Russians and went ow!
