From google - Due to the elevated threat level police personnel face from armed paramilitary groups, unlike the majority of police services in the United Kingdom, the PSNI routinely arms its officers with personal protection weapons and allows its officers to carry their issue sidearm off-duty
They certainly were back in the day.
Yes.
As my friends in PSNI are regarded by RockRose as, 'nasty little *** with guns' I can confirm they are real authorised and accredited Law Enforcement Officers who routinely carry firearms.
An old RUC colleague who I met several times during the troubles still comes to the UK along with serving PSNI officers to compete in Police Rifle shooting competitions. He carries a sevice issue Glock even though retired but has to surrender it when entering the UK mainland along with his travellers. One of the few cases I am aware in the UK and N.I. where someone is licensed to carry a firearm for their own protection. When the RUC were changed to become the PSNI .A sop to the Good Friday agreement the authorities tried to ban that entitlement but thankfully failed
I was discussing the NSPI firearms training tactics with him only last September regarding shots fired at a close identified target, We were told a double tap to the largest body mass (Chest Area) and maybe one head shot. He grinned and said ,'"No way. We empty the whole clip in the feckers"
All well and good if you have plenty of spare charged clips to reload if another perp pops his head up.
