In theory, the troops are supposed to help with 'contingencies' and logistical problems. I haven't spent a long time looking, but there isn't a clearer explanation of what they are for than that. But of course nobody is going to actually say that they're deployed in the interests of protecting public order, so who knows?

The country was offered a choice of leaving or remaining and the majority who bothered to vote chose to leave. The blame for this current shambles lies squarely with the government and in particular with Mrs May. For the past 2½ years they have been devising ways of maintaining the UK’s membership as closely as possible. Instead they should, from the outset, have planned for a “No Deal” exit and concentrated on maintaining the agreements that are in place that facilitate the movement of goods, people and money. The EU knew virtually from day one that a government and civil service of Remainers was never going to rock the boat in pursuance of a “deal” (which is, incidentally, just a deal on the terms under which we leave and has nothing to do with a trade deal). They capitalised on it and our stupid negotiators allowed them to.
Had Remain prevailed there would still be problems because the EU today is not the EU that will exist tomorrow. It has a number of policies which will cause some of its members (including the UK had we remained) considerable grief and its expansionary plans (look at the list of candidate nations) will only see those problems worsen.
To blame the Remainers when those problems arose would be equally disingenuous. The root cause is allowing one’s nation to become so enmeshed in an anti-democratic, corrupt supra-national organisation that bores its way into almost every facet of life (as witnessed by the ridiculous problems that are said to be faced when attempting to get out). The blame for that does not lie with the electorate be they Tories or Labourites, Leavers or Remainers. It lies with successive governments who, for the last 40-odd years, have allowed that situation to develop.
Many MPs have finally recognised that Mrs May’s plans actually mean “BRINO” and will hopefully kick them into touch so that a managed “No Deal” exit can be facilitated. This latest episode of “Project Fear” is designed to scare the electorate witless so that they will encourage their MPs to accept any “deal” rather than No Deal. I hope, for the country's sake, it does not succeed.

Are you attempting to dismiss 1,000 years of history and sovereignty, during which time most, now shouty EU countries such as Germany and France didn't even exist as such.
Britain didn't sign up for the status quo, the hapless position of loss of self-government it now finds itself in, has been incrementally stolen from it, and imo, the saner elements are now saying, enough is enough.

This is an opportunity for the UK to grow worldwide and not be constrained by a tinpot dictatorship such that the EU prety much is and certainly will be very shortly.
"Little Britain" is certainly not what it will be if we grab the opportunities that will be available to us. The world is far bigger than the EU.

"I know we got divorced a few years ago dear ..but could I pop round on a Wednesday and a Saturday for a quickie..for old times sake, you understand". It always ends in tears..and so will this proposal. We need a clean break and spend the next few years re-building what could be a decent country for us all.
