Old fighter Hess credits with Military Medal, perhaps (13). This looks to be MESSERSCHMITT although I'm not totally sure of the parsing.
However, this leaves me with an across clue – acquisitiveness (5) G-E-T with the T being the next to last T of MESSERSCHMITT.
Surely this should be GREED?
I'm sure it will be very simple for the hive mind, but I just can't see it. (Wood and trees).

Messerschmidt - may help ;)))_
Think it's an acceptable alternative spelling
...sorry, very slow thinking here; it's also an anagram of

'Hess credits + MM'
Yes I also thought it ended schmidt so maybe the setter did too

I think you may all be right. It certainly fits the parsing, but the setter didn't do his research properly as the company which makes the planes (to which the clue refers) is spelt with a double 'T' at the end.
Thank you all.
