I just saw this on TV at the funeral of Jimmy McIlroy. I know people mean well and are showing their appreciation, but it just doesn't seem right to me to be applauding a coffin. I know. It's not the coffin they're applauding, but it still doesn't seem right. These are solemn occasions aren't they?

it was said (probably wrongly) that after thousands of people turned out for the funeral of Louis B Mayer of MGM, Groucho Marx said "Give the people what they want and they'll come and see it."
Maybe that's an English thing then, Andy....at the end of uncle's service we all clapped and cheered and hugged each other......lots of whooohooos.....
I suppose if you're English sitting sedately clapping is the same....but 'tis a bit dull don't you think....and....

Comparing me to a mating walrus has just created a vacancy in the queue....... :-(
I don't like the whoop whoops at a funeral - very Paddy Doherty and his ilk
I believe it's not yet required. Does drown out the harrumphing though.
The funeral of Jimmy Mac was seen as a celebration of his life and the applause was in appreciation of what he had achieved during that life. Didn't attend Turf Moor as i was working but Radio Lancashire kindly covered the entire service which was both respectful and celebratory. A fitting send off for a great footballer and true gent.
Gor - what short memories y' all have !

Champagne Charlie gave a eulogy at Princess Di's funeral
' I shall bear the burden of bringing up my nephews in her memory ' and similar tudge - and got a round of applause !

Her Maj said froo her gritted dentures - Oh they are applauding now are they?

applause also at Clinton's speech at Aretha - but he knnows how to work an audience ....
' I looked at the coffin and thought - what ya wearin; today mah lurve'
audience screams and claps

it's not a cigar - it;s a microphone !

ter daaah - gets coat and leaves funeral again
Applauding the fact they're dead and gone ? Some may feel that way but probably tactless to show it.
In our church the congregation is asked to give a newly baptised baby a round of applause, why, I don't know, more than one baby has started to cry at the noise.
There's some strange churches/preachers about.
I know that situation when a burst of applause breaks out and you're holding a baby - they don't half jump.
Yes .... if it's appropriate.
One person usually begins softly looking around for approval and others join in to spare their blushes. When did it start in America as surely it must have .
