we have an apple tree in the garden, and we have no idea whether the apples are eating or cooking apples, anyone have any idea how we can tell, or do we just have to try eating them and see how they taste?

Best thing to do, is try them, and see. We have an old Apple Tree, and the Apples range from Cox's size, to Massiive cookers size, and no-one can identifythem, and they are good for both.
Brogdale will tell you what it is - or at least point you at the most likely.

The difference between 'eating apples' and 'cooking apples' is not so much in the taste, but depends more on whether the apple holds together when cooked, or turns to mush.

Thanks everyone, I think we'll just try eating them. I had always thought cooking apples made you ill if you ate them, but maybe that's just something my mum used to say to stop us eating them before she got chance to make a crumble!
