My mum lives about a half a mile from the beach in a small cul-de-sac which backs onto farmland etc, most mornings my mum is woken by crows landing on the roof of our house, is there anything we can do to scare the off?

are they crows or jackdaws.
we had almost 100 jackdaws, they killed most of the other smaller birds then a few people got together and shot most of them. It sounds cruel but they could not grow to the numbers they had been without human intervention.
they would even pickon each other. they ended up mobbing not only smal dogs and cats but children too. The council have also culled some in areas too.
A restaurant we know on a harbour seafront has installed a loudspeaker on the roof which plays a tape of seagulls in distress to keep the birds off but I've no idea where they got it from. Maybe if you Googled "bird scarers - loudspeakers" or something similar you might come up with a supplier.
errrr ... a Scarecrow?
If they are landing on the ridge there is plenty that can be done but you will need t get in touch with a pest controler, they can put things along the ridge to prevent birds from perching.
You could invite Worzel Gummidge for tea, and ask him if he would like to stay for a week - out in the garden.
