If you were sitting on tube carriage, or on a bus, and through one door walked a very old person, with a walking stick, and at the other end, a woman in her third trimester...and there were no seats free, who would you give up your seat for?

Only the elderly person. Unless the pregnant woman was really struggling or it was outside of London then no. I have received too much abuse from feminist types in London so now I dont bother to hold a door open or let them sit down or go first.

Outside of London it is different and I still do it.

I am surprised that in this day and age of Health & Safety, standing is still allowed on public transport.
The majority stand on tubes and a good proportion on the buses in the rush hour AOG. So nothing will change since it is impossible to put more on. Same the World over, well in the rush hours I have been on.
Growing up I would never have occupied a seat on a bus whilst an adult was standing - it just wasn't done. Mind you I'm talking about the 50/60s when we had manners.
The last time I offered my seat to a lady on the bus, I got a "no thank you" accompanied by a withering look of disdain.

My mum was offered a seat on the Tube when she was quite elderly and frail. She said to me 'How decrepit does he think I am?' quite indignantly. He was only trying to be polite!

I haven't been on a tube or bus for 50 years.
I thought that today, ALL women were pregnant.
Like the majority on here, the elderly person would be offered the seat first.
Best way to avoid the trouble is don't sit down. If you have small children with you, sit them on your lap. If you have older children, make them stand up.
