My leccy bill went through the roof a little whole ago, with the direct debit, doubling from £80 to £160. Had the boiler bloke round this morning, over an unrelated problem, told him about the bill, he checked and said that someone had switched the immersion heater on. It must have been on for weeks. My outstanding balance on the leccy bill is £280.

Nobody in the house is claiming responsibility for flicking the switch, though I highly suspect that the mister is the culprit.

A very expensive lesson.

Stick it in the off position with tape.
Can’t remember the installation law regarding immersion heaters, but think they are supposed to be on a totally seperate supply and fuse from your consumer box. Pull out the fuse if it’s still the old fuse wire type, or flick the switch if it’s a mcb type.

I’ve written all over the switch with bright blue pen, so I don’t think it’ll get touched anymore. Fingers will be chopped off if it does.
Yes - when I moved in here the previous owners had (helpfully?) left the immersion on - and it wasn't even on a time switch.

Fortunately I wondered how/why I was getting plenty of hot water when the boiler didn't seem to be kicking in very much and so I investigated after a couple of days.

At which point I also discovered that the boiler control valve was 'knackered' (technical term) and only did hot water when the heating was on ... which (of course) was why they'd had the immersion on in the first place ...

I could kill my husband. I know it was him. I never touched the switch, and the kids are far too lazy to even walk to the boiler cupboard, let alone look for a random switch.

I was putting the water on for an hour in the morning and thinking 'this is great, hot water all day, for an hours worth of heating'. What a div.
If the blue pen doesn't work, Rocky.....rig up a surprise mousetrap....;-)
